How to Listen to EPUB Files as Audiobooks on iPhone (2026 Guide)

Step-by-step guide to converting EPUB ebooks into audiobooks on iPhone or iPad. Offline AI text-to-speech, no per-book purchase, no upload of your books, free forever.

How do I turn an EPUB into an audiobook on iPhone?

Install a free TTS audiobook reader like Eist from the App Store, save your EPUB to the iPhone Files app, then import it into Eist and press play. The whole flow takes under a minute, runs offline once voices are downloaded, and never uploads your book to a cloud server.

This is the iPhone-specific version of the complete EPUB-to-audiobook guide.

Step 1: Install Eist from the App Store

Open the App Store and search for Eist – Audiobook Reader. Install. The free tier gives you unlimited listening — no account, no trial timer, no payment method.

Direct App Store link.

Step 2: Get your EPUB onto your iPhone

There are five common ways to get an EPUB into the Files app:

  • AirDrop from a Mac
  • Email attachment — tap the attachment, choose “Save to Files”
  • Safari download — tap any .epub link, choose “Save to Files”
  • iCloud Drive — drop the EPUB into iCloud on your Mac, it syncs to your iPhone Files app
  • Google Drive / Dropbox — open the app, find the file, tap “Save to Files”

Once the EPUB is in the Files app (under “On My iPhone” or any folder), Eist can find it.

Step 3: Import into Eist

Open Eist. Tap the Import button. The iOS file picker opens — navigate to wherever you saved the EPUB, tap it, done. Eist parses chapters and metadata automatically.

If you don’t have an EPUB on hand, Eist ships with Project Gutenberg’s 70,000 free public-domain books built in. Tap Discover, search a title, one-tap import.

Step 4: Pick a voice and press play

Three free voices ship out of the box. Pick whichever feels right — you can swap any time without losing your place. Tap play. Eist starts narrating immediately using on-device AI text-to-speech.

If you want the deeper voice catalogue (20+ voices including warmer fiction narrators and faster non-fiction voices), Eist Premium is $4.99/month after a 3-month free trial. The free tier remains unlimited forever — premium just adds variety.

What about Apple Books and iOS VoiceOver?

You can technically use VoiceOver (Settings → Accessibility) to have iOS read content aloud in any app, including Apple Books. It’s a workaround, not a designed flow:

  • No chapter navigation between books
  • No per-book persistent state
  • No variable playback speed adjusted to listening
  • No sleep timer designed for audiobooks
  • Robotic system TTS, not narration-tuned AI voices

For a single chapter in a pinch, VoiceOver works. For listening to entire books on commutes, you’ll want a purpose-built TTS audiobook reader. The same logic applies to Speak Screen (Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content). Both are accessibility tools, not audiobook tools.

Tips for the best experience on iPhone

  • Use lock-screen controls. Eist supports background playback — start play, lock the screen, control via the lock-screen media widget or Bluetooth headphone buttons.
  • Bluetooth car audio. Pair your iPhone with the car stereo via Bluetooth — Eist appears as a media source.
  • Sleep timer for bedtime. 30 minutes is the sweet spot.
  • 1.3×–1.5× speed. Most fiction readers settle there; non-fiction goes higher.
  • Download voices on WiFi once. They cache forever for offline use.

Privacy on iPhone specifically

Eist on iPhone runs all synthesis on-device using the same on-device AI infrastructure Apple uses for its own accessibility features. Your book content does not leave the device. There is no account, no Apple ID requirement beyond the App Store install, and the iOS permission requests Eist makes are minimal (just storage and notifications for media controls).

What if my EPUB is from Apple Books?

Apple Books often DRM-locks EPUBs purchased through the iBookstore. DRM-locked EPUBs can’t be opened by third-party apps. Two options:

  1. Use only EPUBs you bought DRM-free (Humble Bundle, Standard Ebooks, indie publishers, Project Gutenberg).
  2. Re-buy or borrow the title elsewhere.

For Kindle EPUBs, see how to export an EPUB from Kindle.
